Work your creative genius with a Dahlicious dress up day!

The summer holidays are approaching faster than you might think, it’s time for teachers to get thinking about events in September – and maybe even start a bit of sneaky pre-planning!

September is Roald Dahl month, and this year is set to be particularly special. 2014 is the 50th anniversary of one of Dahl’s most beloved books: the wonderful Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. So here at Unistage, we’ve been thinking up ways that schools can use our crafty staging solutions to celebrate September in style.

Hold a catwalk of characters

Hosting a non-uniform day is always an easy way to raise a little bit of money without anyone having to dig too deep – and let’s not forget how much kids enjoy escaping the confines of their shirts and ties!

Why not have a Dahlicious dress-up day and host a catwalk of characters? Our school staging solutions can easily be arranged as a single-level catwalk with a wider stage at the back, and kids will love the chance to show off their outfits inspired by Roald Dahl’s characters.

From Willy Wonka and his Oompa Loompas to the fearsome Miss Trunchbull, and the witches, students can let their imaginations run riot.

The play’s the thing!

There are plenty of brilliant scenes from Roald Dahl’s books that would lend themselves to a theatrical adaptation by any staff and students brave enough!

Set up a flat or multi-level stage, depending on how far your imagination takes you, and entertain students with some of their favourite moments from Dahl’s classic tales. You can even add some atmosphere with our stage scenery flats, which come as blank canvases or pre-printed scenes.

Raise a tune or two…

Generation after generation has fallen in love with Roald Dahl’s stories, which explains why there are so many film adaptations of his books.

Why not set up some tiered school staging and host a special concert, featuring some of the best loved songs from Roald Dahl films? From “The Candyman” to “I Want It Now!”, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory alone has a brilliant range of tunes for students to try out.

If your little singers are the more energetic types (we can certainly see them struggling to stay still during the Oompa Loompa song!), it’s perhaps best to stick with a single-level stage that will allow for some interesting dance moves without the risk of catastrophe.

While the official Dahlicious dress-up day takes place on Friday, 26th September this year, schools can celebrate whenever they like – the real reason behind the day is to raise funds for Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, which works to improve the lives of seriously ill children.
