St Barnabas Primary School’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream was a smash hit thanks to their specially modified staging, provided by Unistage.
Taking advantage of our part exchange offer, the Lancashire school decided to get rid of its old heavy staging blocks and replace it with a stage which could be easily reconfigured and stored away compactly.
Not wanting them to rush their choice of finishes for their new stage, Unistage agreed to lend St Barnabas a stage for their summer Shakespeare performance.
As with many Primary Schools, St Barnabas has very limited storage space. One cupboard houses their PE Equipment as well as their staging, so the compact way Unistage stores is a major advantage to the school.
St Barnabas wanted the stage to run the length of one side of the hall with the ability to use at different levels. Helen Thomas, Deputy Headteacher had lots of enthusiastic ideas that needed to be catered for with their stage and Unistage ensured this was done.
After they decided on a carpet finish, the colour proved a difficult decision for the staff members. Instead the children in Year 5 almost unanimously decided on the colour scheme.
The school is now working on fundraising ideas to generate the money to buy their own scenery to accompany their stage.
Victoria Walmsley, of Unistage, said: “I went to watch their performance of A Midsummer Nights Dream and it was fab! The Year 6 children really understood the play and that was evident in the way they portrayed the characters and their script.
“For a Year 6 Class to take on Shakespeare I thought they did an amazing job.”
Mrs Thomas, of St Barnabas, said: “Unistage is an absolutely amazing product and service! When we decided that we needed to replace our very old stage just 3 weeks before two major school productions, the Unistage team pulled out all the stops to make sure that both were played out on a Unistage.”
“Both our performances of ‘Junior School Musical’ and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ were enhanced immensely by Unistage and the support and advice you gave us. The ease with which you can change the stage structure made it possible for 2 such different productions to be rehearsed simultaneously and the time you put into training the children and site supervisor made them feel like ‘experts’ very quickly. In the past I have contributed to developing theatrical facilities in a number of primary schools, with different staging products. Unistage beats them all! For service, quality of product and ease of use you are first rate. Thank you.”
