Here at Unistage, we’re proud to have been selected as staging supplier to the National Primary School of the Year 2013. If ever there was a glowing commendation, we think this is it!
As a primary school in an under-privileged area, Pakeman Primary in Islington, London, was used to tightening its belt. But when the school was awarded Pupil Premium funding, allocated to schools in order to assist them in supporting under-privileged pupils, life took a turn for the better.
Under Government rules, around 70% of pupils at Pakeman Primary qualify for Pupil Premium funding – an invaluable helping hand when it comes to giving children in under-privileged communities a fair start in life.
Over the last year, Pakeman used its Pupil Premium funding to invest in a wealth of extra support for its pupils: increased one-on-one tuition, more staff, homework clubs, and family support to help the hard work at school carry on after school hours.
The results were astounding, with assessments showing that staff and pupil performances had all improved thanks to the hard work of everyone at the school.
So when Pakeman Primary was awarded National Primary School of the Year in recognition of the outstanding achievement and progress made by its pupils – and presented with an extra £10,000 – staff were finally able to invest some of their budget on making life that little bit more creative for their students.
After much discussion, the school decided to refurbish one of its assembly halls with a modular staging solution from Unistage, eventually plumping for our Set 42 Multi-Level Stage, which is perfect for chopping and changing designs – and accommodating a lot of eager pupils at once!
Lynne Gavin, Headteacher at Pakeman Primary, commented:
“We’d been a school that had very little money for a long time because pupil places were left unfilled. It was very hard to do the things we wanted to do, and we had quite a wish list. Then the Pupil Premium money came along and that all changed – it was amazing.
“The stage [is] portable and can be modified from a flat stage to a tiered stage so that children can be seen better. It’s something for all the children to enjoy, and it means that they can all be seen. The stage is fantastic.”
